UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television
Department of Theater – Lighting

Announces a search for a full time, tenure-track position for an Assistant Professor in the area of lighting design, beginning July 1, 2019.

A minimum of 6 years’ experience in professional lighting design and, at least, 2 years teaching experience at the university level is preferred.

Responsibilities:
• Teach undergraduate and graduate level theater courses at the lower and upper division level, including lighting design, fundamentals of theater design and topics in theater design and technology.
• Supervise graduate and undergraduate lighting projects for productions annually, including new and devised works.
• Teach other courses in areas of theater expertise.
• Ability to teach traditional design practices and innovative design skills.
• Contribute to the Department and University equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives and work in harmony with the vision and mission of UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.
• Mentor and advise students in academic and career planning.
• Serve on Department and University committees and participate in other service opportunities.
• Maintain and grow an artistic national and/or international professional career.
• Perform other responsibilities as appropriate for a faculty member at a major university, including assisting with student recruitment and participation in faculty governance.

Qualifications:

MFA in Theatrical Design or equivalent professional experience.

The ideal candidate will have experience that demonstrates:

• The ability to successfully teach at the collegiate level, including traditional and current design practice;
• Success in lighting design at the professional level, including engagement with emerging design technologies;
• A collaborative approach to a general theater education that values development of students with a broad range of knowledge and skills in theater performance, production, and scholarship;
• Ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse students;
• A commitment to experiential learning and dynamic pedagogical practice;
• Excellent organizational and communication skills that demonstrate collaborative engagement with students and colleagues;
• Multi-disciplinary approaches to creative projects;
• Breadth of educational background, with experience that values critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and interdisciplinary work preferred;
• Dedication to institutional and community service.
