Position description

The Photoreceptor Biochemistry laboratory at Stein Eye, run by Prof. Gabriel Travis, (https://www.biolchem.ucla.edu/people/faculty/gabriel-h-travis) studies the visual cycle, which provides visual chromophore to maintain the sensitivity of photoreceptors during light exposure. The Travis laboratory recently identified two novel mechanisms for light-driven chromophore regeneration. Mutations in the genes for visual-cycle proteins are affected in multiple human inherited blinding diseases. The project is to study biochemical and photochemical conversions of visual retinoids in cultured cells and retinas from genetically modified mice. The project may also involve physiological recording of photoresponses in isolated retinas from the same mice.
