Summary:
Under the direction of the head of the Physical Education department and Summer Program Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, the Educator will assist in the delivery of an excellent summer Water Safety and Emergency Training program for secondary school instruction, teaching one section, up to as many as fifteen (15) classes which are four (4) hours long, over a three (3) week period.

The curriculum at Geffen Academy presents a multi-faceted exploration of Physical Education. The Physical Education curriculum will incorporate many important life skills such as leadership, character development, grit, determination, collaboration, and teamwork.

Through this course, students learn to care for others in emergency situations while learning about their personal safety in diverse emergency medical situations. The main components of the course include: First Aid, CPR, and Water Safety. Students will participate in scenarios, practical skill testing, and simulated rescue drills, so that they are well equipped to handle unexpected emergency events, while developing team leadership by using strong collaborative and communication skills during class exercises. To pass the class, students must fulfill the requirements to earn the following American Red Cross certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Advanced First Aid, AED, EpiPen Administration, Basic Water Rescue, Oxygen Administration, Blood-Borne Pathogens, Incident Commands, Multiple-Casualty Incidents. In addition, for those who wish, there will be an opportunity to earn the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification, but this is not required to pass the class.

Job Duties:
 Consistent with school’s leadership’s direction, collaborate with other educators in creation of a Geffen Academy program that meets the needs and interests of the school’s students.

 Consistent with department leadership’s direction, collaborate with relevant UCLA faculty in devising programs that enable Geffen Academy’s students to take advantage of the school’s relationship with a research university operating at the cutting edge of knowledge creation.

 Communicate information about student progress to relevant student services colleagues, including but not limited to department head, Dean of Students, academic advising and college guidance staff, Registrar, counselor/psychologist, and athletic team coaches.

 Consistent with department leadership’s direction, assess the continued relevance and success of course offerings within the department.

 Consistent with department leadership’s direction, orient new faculty and establish appropriate mentoring relationships.

 Meet as needed with the department.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have extensive experience in secondary school physical education instruction, and experience coaching a competitive swim team at the middle school and/or high school level. Candidates should expect to coach as part of the Geffen Academy interscholastic program in addition to their Physical Education teaching duties.
The preferred candidate would hold current certifications in each of the following:
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor [or equivalent]
• American Red Cross Lifeguard [or equivalent]
It is preferred that the successful candidate have a Master’s degree in a related field and a strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy’s mission, vision, and values. A record of outstanding success as a secondary or university educator. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain instructional issues to colleagues, students, and families. Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption. Must be capable of developing and sustaining close, effective working relationships with colleagues in the department and from other parts of UCLA and of the Geffen Academy staff on matters of interdisciplinary and institutional concern. Must have experience coaching a competitive swim team at the middle school and/or high school level.
