The Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (VAPAE) in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture offers an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental series of courses designed to introduce undergraduates to the key issues and methodologies in the field of arts education for multiple publics and to a broad range of possible career paths including K-12 teaching, museum education, socially-engaged arts practice, creative arts therapies, teaching artistry and arts advocacy.
VAPAE is committed to creating a diverse pool of candidates for potential part-time teaching positions in arts education during each academic year. In particular, VAPAE is now interested in meeting qualified candidates to teach its new Social Justice Artivism: Theory & Practice course.
VAPAE understands social justice to be a commitment to working towards equity, inclusion, diversity, access, and anti-racism throughout society and, in particular, within the arts and arts education. Social justice is therefore the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities, despite institutional and historical oppression and discrimination. Artivism is an umbrella term that describes how social and creative practice can connect art and activism. For the purpose of this proposed course, social justice artivism focuses on how art in its multiple forms can embrace principles of social justice and civic/ community engagement, and explore how social/ political action can be creative, poetic and artistically innovative.
This new course aims to introduce the theories and practices of social justice artivism to undergraduate arts education students that are interested in exploring social topics, political awareness, intervention, disruption and action in ways that move beyond traditional paradigms of activism. In this way, social justice artivism engages in both personal and collective transformation. The course will bridge theory to practice as it leads students through regular assignments that require students to read, analyze, and evaluate social justice practices and scholarship, offers regular experiential arts workshops, and invites local practitioners working at the intersection of activism and arts to the class.
Applicants should be interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in their approach to teaching the arts and activism, familiar with culturally responsive pedagogies, and have experience working in the fields of arts education, activism and community engagement. Applicants may submit letters of intent, course proposals and/ or accompanying syllabi that pertain to and/or support the themes and topics as described above.
Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree and relevant professional experience.
Salary: Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Appointments contingent on availability of funding.
