The University of California, Los Angeles invites applicants and nominations for a nationally recognized academic leader to join the faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) as Chair of the Department of Medicine. As a preeminent clinician, scholar, educator and administrator, the Chair is also eligible for the William S. Adams, M.D. Chair in Medicine and will have the opportunity to concurrently serve as the department’s Executive Medical Director.
The Department of Medicine at UCLA is among the largest and most highly ranked in the country with over 1500 faculty members spanning 14 sub-specialty divisions. Over the past decade, the department has seen enormous growth of its clinical footprint encompassing dozens of clinics and hospitalist teams throughout Southern California while maintaining its position among the top ten departments of medicine in the nation for NIH funding. Recognized for its outstanding contributions to clinical, translational, and basic sciences research, the Department has 33 Endowed Chairs and over $140 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the Department enjoys productive affiliations with a number of organizations and community hospitals, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Charles R. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and the Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM), the Chair works collaboratively with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to establish and execute the strategic vision of the Department of Medicine within the greater medical enterprise. The Chair cultivates an equitable, inclusive, collegial, anti-racist and multidisciplinary culture consistent with the principles of the DGSOM’s Cultural North Star, while also upholding UCLA Health’s patient-experience model, CICARE, and promoting clinical quality, safety, and operational distinction.
In support of advancing the academic mission of excellence across clinical care, education, research, and community outreach and engagement, the ideal candidate is a nationally recognized individual within a relevant medicine subspecialty, with a deep commitment to advancing diversity, health equity and inclusion alongside scientific excellence, innovation and compassionate care. The successful candidate will demonstrate an exceptional track record in and commitment to the areas that comprise the academic mission, with superb communication skills and an aptitude for collaboration in a complex environment. All candidates must hold an MD or equivalent advanced degree, board certification, appropriate academic credentials for a tenured faculty appointment, and be eligible for licensure in California.
