Overview of the Position:
The CEILS Associate Director for Collaborative Initiatives in Faculty Development will be an expert in creating sustainable models for driving pedagogical improvement and instructional innovation among faculty and graduate students engaged in undergraduate education within the Humanities. Responsibilities comprise designing and implementing in-person and online programming and resources that prepare faculty and graduate students, including teaching assistants (TAs), to utilize evidence-based, inclusive teaching strategies shown to be effective in diverse classrooms. In addition, duties include coordinating with UCLA’s Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) program, a national professional development network supporting all UCLA graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, to facilitate multidisciplinary pedagogical training and mentoring of future faculty in Humanities as well as to broaden awareness among and prepare graduate students in Humanities for diverse and successful careers within and outside the academy. Responsibilities also involve providing instruction and engaging in curriculum development in a Humanities department.
The position will be under the direct supervision of the Director of the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS) with responsibilities to the EPIC Program Leader, David MacFadyen, in their role as the Director of Humanities Teaching Engagement. The incumbent will work collaboratively with both CEILS, CIRTL, and EPIC staff to develop resources and implement programming in Humanities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Independently provide instructional support, resources, and programming for faculty in Humanities.
    • Develop workshops, institutes, and programs in coordination with CEILS by adopting successful and scalable models such as the day-long Annual Faculty Workshop on Best Practices in Teaching and the week-long Summer Institute, both in-person events focused on introducing UCLA faculty to evidence-based and inclusive instructional practices, as well as the year-long Faculty Learning Program (FLP), which is offered in a hybrid format and partners regional community college faculty with UCLA faculty in training that supports development of reflective teaching practices.
    • Develop online resources, including a comprehensive website, to support all Humanities instructors in their adoption of inclusive and effective student-centered teaching methods.
    • Lead program assessment and impact tracking of resources, reporting outcomes and making recommendations for improvement based on feedback from stakeholders; utilize findings from the Seminars in Teaching Excellence (STEs) and related EPIC workshops to improve faculty programming.
    • Diversify collaborations with faculty across departments within Humanities, engaging them in pedagogical training opportunities, curriculum development projects, peer observation of teaching processes, and assessment of student learning and other cognitive and affective metrics of student success.
    • Facilitate faculty collaborations with Humanities Technology (Humtech) and Online Teaching & Learning (OTL) to support development and adoption of online tools and educational technology solutions that enhance pedagogy.
    • Consult with individual faculty, offering feedback on teaching and pedagogical expertise and guidance in support of evidence-based improvements in teaching.
    • Use education research and assessment data to inform departments and motivate faculty to transform instructional practices in the classroom to be inclusive and student-centered.
    • Collaborate with other units on campus to expand capacity for education innovation efforts to improve student outcomes, enhance diversity, and foster community outreach, to include the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT), the Center for Community Learning, the Undergraduate Research Center, the UCLA Library, Writing Programs, and other discipline-specific teaching and learning centers and educational technology hubs across campus.
    • Contribute content to the monthly EPIC newsletter and other media outlets, including social media, to promote communication and recruitment of Humanities faculty in pedagogical training activities.

  2. Independently provide instructional support and facilitate career development of graduate students, including teaching assistants (TAs), in Humanities.
    • Lead and engage in initiatives related to the creation of pioneering and sustainable models for the training of TAs as well as future Humanities faculty.
    • Facilitate workshops on inclusive teaching, effective communication skills, career development activities, and other areas critical to TA professional development including self-care and balancing their scholarship with teaching responsibilities.
    • In collaboration with the CIRTL@UCLA program director and other UCLA faculty, promote participation among Humanities graduate students in the multidisciplinary Scholars of Teaching as Research (STAR) program; courses in this program include: GDPD 496A: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate Teaching, GDPD 496B: Teaching-as-Research, and GDPD 496C: Implementing Teaching-as-Research.
    • Mentor individual or groups of UCLA graduate students conducting TAR projects in Humanities, and recruit Humanities faculty to participate in TAR mentoring.
    • Promote all on campus and cross-network CIRTL events via website, social media, and EPIC newsletter.
    • Create and support learning communities focused on professional development opportunities that will better prepare UCLA graduate students for careers within and outside academia.
    • In collaboration with the UCLA Career Center, develop and co-teach a career development course for Humanities graduate students modeled after Mol Bio 497 (Exploring Careers Inside and Outside the Academy); work with CIRTL@UCLA program director to integrate this course into the CIRTL certification process; engage Humanities departments in promoting graduate student participation in the career course.
    • Iteratively evaluate and use assessment findings to inform improvements to programming and courses supporting graduate students, including findings from the Seminars in Teaching Excellence (STEs) and related EPIC workshops.
    • In coordination with CEILS, recruit and support the participation of Humanities graduate students in regional internship programs (e.g., ProjectMATCH) supporting career pathways in community college teaching and academic leadership.

  3. May teach/co-teach courses in field of expertise and/or related to TA training or career development in Humanities and/or the CIRTL STAR program; prepare and deliver interactive, inclusive lectures, give students feedback on all assignments, and submit student grades in accordance with university policy.

  4. Participate in the development of grant proposals for extramural funding; efforts may include project conceptualization, connecting relevant campus and regional or national partners, grant proposal writing, and budget development.

  5. Assist with the implementation and administration of grant-funded projects, including coordinating and executing the assessment and reporting activities, reviewing applications for selection of project-specific personnel, and tracking project expenses.

  6. Represent UCLA, CEILS, EPIC/Humanities, and CIRTL by attending and presenting at regional and national conferences.

  7. Publish scholarly work related to education research, curriculum development, and teaching.

  8. Act as a liaison for CEILS, EPIC/Humanities, and CIRTL by attending campus meetings and events and serving on campus committees, including the CIRTL@UCLA steering committee.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in the Humanities or a related discipline and demonstrated ability to engage university faculty in activities surrounding teaching. Experience preferred in the areas of undergraduate and graduate education, instructional innovation/curriculum development, and promotion of student diversity, access, and retention in higher education. Ability to develop, evaluate, and improve instructional materials and teaching methods. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact and lead effectively within programs and activities involving diverse faculty, staff, and students. Ability to manage time effectively and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of CEILS, the Humanities Division, the College and the University.
