Description
The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position of Assistant Researcher whose research will focus on analysis of observations, model simulations and weather/climate predictions associated with water availability and variability. The research involves:
a) Using sub-seasonal to seasonal and climate model simulations and predictions, along with satellite and other observations, to improve understanding of sources of predictability for precipitation and related quantities, and evaluating weather and climate model simulation and prediction fidelity.
b) Using space based and in situ observations of groundwater change to complement existing groundwater models and build a multi-scale groundwater analysis framework to improve our understanding of groundwater variability and future depletion.
c) Using WETCHARTS methane model coupled to CARDAMOM to quantify wetland emissions in the transition area between the wet tropics and dry tropics in Africa and South America.
Candidates must have the following qualification:
1) Ph.D. in one of the earth science disciplines or in related fields in physics, statistics, or applied math, and minimum of 3 years in relevant fields;
2) extensive knowledge of earth science, particularly atmospheric and hydrologic processes, global weather/climate modeling, and quantitative analysis and uncertainty quantification;
3) excellent written and verbal communication skills.
