Assistant Project Scientist
Surgical Neuromodulation and Brain Mapping Laboratory

Position Description
We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurosurgery in the laboratory of Dr. Ausaf Bari.

Dr. Bari’s laboratory focuses on advancing surgical neuromodulation for the restoration of brain and nerve function. The laboratory specializes in the use of human neuronal recordings to better understand the cortical and subcortical circuits underlying movement disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions such as addiction, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and pain. Our basic science interests include the development of brain prosthetic devices and human brain mapping of motor and affective circuits.

Specific Responsibilities
Responsibilities of this position include conducting studies of research study participants with visual cortical prostheses to understand the relationships between visual cortex stimulation and visual perception; conduction neurophysiological studies and analyses in human subject participants to delineate pathophysiological networks underlying depression; preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals; assisting or independently preparing and submitting grant proposals.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD or MD or both. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in the following areas: recording and analysis of human neuronal data including single and multi-unit data, advanced human neurophysiology, advanced neuroimaging methods, development of human neurophysiological tasks, and advanced statistical modeling techniques. Applicants must have experience with UNIX, Python and Matlab and R.

Additional Duties
• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively • Ability to work independently on scientific projects • Ability to prepare and present data in oral and written format on a regular basis • Ability to independently prepare NIH grant applications including clinical trial and basic science proposals • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or MD or both. Strong background in the following areas: computer science and signal processing (using Python, Matlab, R, Bash) and ideally one or more of: in vivo imaging, neurophysiology, and rodent handling.
