Position description

The UCLA Food Studies Program unit seeks a lecturer for Fall 2021 (AY 2021-22) to teach a community-engaged upper-division undergraduate course in the Food Studies program and to facilitate connecting students to community partners. Given the interdisciplinary and evolving nature of the field, Food Studies at UCLA is looking for our instructors to represent multiple perspectives, and we encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply.

This introductory course in documentary video production will focus on screening, discussion, making, and distributing films about food in Los Angeles. Students will explore industrial farming, ranching, and different strategies for creating more sustainable food pathways. Students will also look at social media communication strategies to help think through intervention in the face of historically entrenched industrial food production and regulations, which remain favorable to mass-produced, processed food items.

In this community-engaged course, students will work in teams to create short films about one of several partner organizations in Los Angeles that advocate for healthy, local, sustainable food and/or food practices.

UCLA has a diverse student population in one of the more diverse cities in the nation; we particularly seek candidates who have taught similarly diverse students in a major research university.
