The Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (VAPAE) in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture offers an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental series of courses designed to introduce undergraduates to the key issues and methodologies in the field of arts education for multiple publics and to a broad range of possible career paths including K-12 teaching, museum education, socially-engaged arts practice, creative arts therapies, teaching artist and arts advocacy.
VAPAE is committed to creating a diverse pool of candidates for potential part-time teaching positions in arts education during each academic year. In particular, VAPAE is now interested in meeting qualified candidates to teach its General Education (GE) course: Introduction to Community Engagement through the Arts.
This course meets the undergraduate arts & humanities and society & culture GE requirements, and provides an introduction to the fields of community engagement and community arts. With a multi-disciplinary perspective, the course examines how the visual arts, dance, design/media arts, music, film and theatre is able to create and foster community- in both theoretical and experiential ways. To that end, the course commits to building a close-knit classroom community of its own through interactive arts activities and meeting local practitioners who describe their work in the arts and community.
The course focuses on the possibilities for multidisciplinary arts to engage community within five different settings: 1) family and home sites; 2) K-12 school settings; 3) non-traditional educational settings; 4) community art sites and nonprofits arts organizations; and 5) within the larger umbrella social practice and civic engagement.
An emphasis is placed on the writing process of drafting and revising, with regular writing assignments that require students to read, analyze, and evaluate community arts practices and scholarship.
Applicants should be multidisciplinary in their approach to teaching the arts and arts appreciation, and have experience working in the fields of arts education and community engagement. Applicants may submit letters of intent, course proposals and/ or accompanying syllabi that pertain to and/or support the themes and topics as described above.
Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree and relevant professional experience.
