Outstanding Faculty Investigator in Cancer Prevention and Control for Leadership Role at UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center

The David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA, in collaboration with the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC), is seeking to recruit an outstanding investigator in the broad area of cancer prevention and control to a tenure-track/tenured position at the Associate Professor or Professor level. This individual will complement the existing leadership of the Population Sciences components of the JCCC. The JCCC is a matrix NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center that draws members from a broad range of departments in the health sciences schools including the DGSOM, the Schools of Public Health, Nursing, Dentistry as well as numerous departments in the basic sciences, life sciences, and other parts of the University. There are unique opportunities for collaborative clinical, translational, and community population science research.

The DGSOM is one of four health science professional schools (including the Fielding School of Public Health, the School of Nursing and the School of Dentistry) and a major teaching hospital that are located contiguously on the same physical campus as the entire University. There are strong ties to all of the UCLA campus schools (e.g., law, public affairs, management, engineering) and departments (e.g., sociology, psychology, world arts and cultures/dance, urban planning) that facilitates collaboration and transdisciplinary research. Los Angeles County is the most populous and most diverse county in the United States, offering rich and vast opportunities for cancer population science research.

JCCC investigators have long-standing relationships with the Los Angeles County Health Agency that contains the Departments of Health Services, Public Health and Mental Health, as well as multiple federally qualified health center systems, and a vast network of community organizations involved in cancer prevention and control activities. Both the state of California and Los Angeles County house population-based cancer registries that participate in the SEER program as well as the National Program of Cancer Registries. The JCCC is part of the University of California Cancer Consortium that was created to catalyze collaborations among the five University of California NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The JCCC and DGSOM partnership fosters a highly collaborative research community that promotes innovative and cutting-edge research.

We are seeking an independent and collaborative scientist with an MD, PhD, or other doctoral degree. Previous leadership and/or engagement experience within an NCI-designated cancer center is desirable. Expertise in a broad range of cancer-focused areas is welcome, including but not limited to: outcomes research, behavioral intervention research, implementation science, community-partnered research, cancer disparities research, health care delivery research, bioinformatics /data science, palliative care, survivorship research or cancer genetics. Candidates must have a proven track record of successful federally funded research in cancer prevention and control and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams.

The primary DGSOM department in which the candidate’s faculty appointment will reside will be determined based on a mutually agreed upon assessment of the most appropriate department based on the selected candidate’s research focus. A joint appointment in another department or another school such as the Fielding School of Public Health is also possible. In addition, the candidate will hold a leadership position in the JCCC that matches their particular expertise.

Candidates are particularly sought who meet the above criteria and have the following:

• A strong peer-reviewed publication and funding record.

• National and preferably international recognition in a field of cancer prevention and control, and population health.

• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

• A demonstrated ability to lead highly interactive and multidisciplinary research teams contributing to the Cancer Center’s strategic goals.

• Success moving scientific discovery into new research directions and applications in populations.

• Interest in and ability to achieve integration of research into the clinical enterprise.

• Experience collaborating with cancer center members and leadership, hospitals, faculty practice organizations, research institutes, community clinical and non-clinical organizations such as county health departments or schools, and other mission-critical institutions as appropriate.

• A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation.
