Position description

The UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) is undertaking a search for Chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS, http://ehs.ph.ucla.edu/) who will also serve as the director of the Southern California Education and Research Center (SCERC). The SCERC is partially funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The full-time equivalent faculty of the EHS Department are funded through FSPH and the UCLA Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

We seek an outstanding candidate who can provide exceptional leadership for the EHS and SCERC’s faculty, staff, and students. This candidate should be recognized internationally as a distinguished scholar in occupational and environmental health or a related discipline, have a strong track record of extramural funding, demonstrated excellence in research and management, and sufficient qualifications to be appointed at the level of a tenured Associate Professor or Full Professor. The candidate’s expertise can be in any area of occupational and environmental health, broadly defined. Areas of particular interest include (but are not limited to) occupational health and its intersection with climate change or health equity.

The EHS Department is one of five in FSPH and has always been a leader within the field. We seek candidates who will define the future of occupational and environmental health and will advance our joint commitments to academic excellence and equity, diversity & inclusion (EDI) for students, faculty, and staff.
The SCERC is one of 18 Centers in the United States whose mission is to protect and improve worker health through education, research, and service. Further information about the SCERC can be found at www.ph.ucla.edu/erc. The SCERC partners with the state-funded COEH at UCLA and UC Irvine. If there is a suitable candidate, leadership of the UCLA COEH is also a possibility.

UCLA is recognized as one of the leading universities in the United States. The campus is located in Westwood Village, one of the most beautiful urban areas of Los Angeles. The UCLA community has a strong history and commitment to inter- and multi- disciplinary research and collaboration. The FSPH is located on the main UCLA campus, with the other health sciences schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing) and the College of Letters and Sciences.

California is an ideal location in which to explore environmental and occupational health issues. California’s history of progressive environmental legislation has produced unique and substantial longitudinal databases relevant to both exposures and health outcomes. California also has some of the most progressive policies nationwide with respect to toxic substances and climate change. In addition, Los Angeles is home to people from more than 100 different nationalities, encouraging global research. As a result, faculty and students in EHS and SCERC are actively engaged in research that spans from local to global. Masters and doctoral training are offered in the EHS Department and SCERC.

The FSPH and EHS at UCLA support local and global initiatives in environmental justice, environmental protection, worker health and safety, adaptive and mitigative measures addressing climate change, and reducing health disparities. Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in environmental and occupational health or a closely related field. In addition to providing leadership for the EHS Department, SCERC, COEH and within the FSPH, duties include maintaining a vigorous research program and teaching, and have significant experience and scholarship.
