Position description

The Departments of Asian American Studies and Urban Planning, in partnership with the Asian American Studies Center (AASC) at UCLA, invite applications from scholars in Asian American studies, ethnic studies, urban studies, urban planning, and urban design for a tenure-track/tenured appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek an innovative thinker who already is or has the potential to become a leading scholar of urban form and built environment issues in Asian American communities and whose work will play an important role in shaping future policy debates. We welcome applicants who adopt a spatial lens to research topics within this broad area, including but not limited to neighborhood change, community development, spatial practices in formal and informal urbanism, and social and cultural identity in the built environment. We are open to scholars with a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.

The UCLA Department of Asian American Studies is one of the largest Asian American Studies programs in the nation, which includes 20 core faculty and 11 affiliated faculty. The Department offers a Master of Arts degree and two concurrent degree programs: Asian American Studies MA/Public Health MPH with the Fielding School of Public Health Department of Community Health Sciences and Asian American Studies MA/Social Welfare MSW with the Luskin School of Public Affairs Department of Social Welfare. As a field, Asian American Studies emerged at UCLA a half century ago to serve the demands of diverse constituencies united by a need to link community engagement, innovative scholarship, and principled change. To address those needs, our field has prioritized interdisciplinary approaches to labor, migration, gendered racialization, empire, sexuality, and myriad forms of organizing, resistance, community, and creativity. Through our research, teaching, and service, we have maintained a commitment to social and economic justice by providing a home in the academy for envisioning and implementing those objectives.

The Department of Urban Planning in the Luskin School of Public Affairs currently hosts 23 tenured/tenure-track planning faculty, six affiliated tenured/tenure-track faculty, six long-term adjunct/practice faculty, two active emeriti professors, 35 PhD students, and 160 Master of Urban and Regional Planning students. Our faculty also teach in the Luskin Public Affairs undergraduate program, which currently has nearly 800 students enrolled in the Major. We have a tradition of intellectual leadership in urban and regional studies and design, and our faculty, students, and alumni have long been known for their passionate commitment to social justice and progressive planning ideals. The Department of Urban Planning has the unique advantage of being situated in the interdisciplinary Luskin School of Public Affairs along with highly ranked departments of Social Welfare and Public Policy. All faculty in the Luskin School of Public Affairs (including the departments of Social Welfare, Urban Planning, and Public Policy) have opportunities to participate in current initiatives in global affairs, digital technologies, the environment, democracy and inequality, and social justice, equity, and opportunity.

This appointment resides jointly in the Departments of Asian American Studies and Urban Planning. The appointee will also be associated with the Asian American Studies Center and join its Faculty Advisory Committee. The Asian American Studies Center is one of the four ethnic studies centers in the UCLA Institute of American Cultures established in 1969 with over 50 Faculty Advisory Committee members. It publishes Amerasia Journal, AAPI Nexus, and numerous books, reports and policy briefs. It has launched the AAPI Policy Initiative with 18 active research and action projects and is translating Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies scholarship for K-12 and undergraduate education. The Asian American Studies Center and the Institute of American Cultures will offer the person hired an additional community of scholars with related interests.

The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD in Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, or a related social science discipline at the time of appointment.
