Instructor - Environmental Studies and Public Policy

UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Course Description:

The internship provides students with a unique experiential learning opportunity related to environmental sustainability. The internship site is selected by the eligible student from among a variety of related disciplines, allowing the student to create a distinctive independent learning experience. The purpose is to apply the material learned in formal Sustainability Certificate academic courses to a workplace setting, acquiring valuable job skills. Students gain hands-on experience by working on real industry problems/projects in the private or public sector or in a nonprofit organization. Students intern for a minimum of 120 working hours. Throughout the internship, students communicate and work alongside an Extension instructor who helps guide them through the
process. Students are required to complete a final report of their experience once they complete the internship. Course is 11 weeks long, 3 hours of instruction per week.

Instructor Duties:

•First-time Extension instructors: participate in paid Canvas (learning management system) and online pedagogy training course. In-person courses require an online component.
•Communicate with Program Director, Program Manager, Program Representatives, and Online Course Managers in a timely manner.
•Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
•Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
•Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies responsive to Extension’s diverse student population.
•Complete mandatory trainings administered by Campus Human Resources and required by the University of California.
•Post final student grades in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications:

•Advanced degree from an accredited institution and at least five years of relevant work experience
•College-level teaching experience preferred
•Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance preferred
•Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
•Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
•Highly effective interpersonal skills

Qualifications
