Position overview

Position title: Professor

Position description

Building upon its commitment to foster an inclusive and more equitable environment and promote the success of historically underrepresented students, The Herb Alpert School of Music invites applications for an open faculty position (Assistant/Associate/Full) in Global Jazz Studies. Global Jazz Studies is an interdepartmental Bachelor of Arts program, and is an extension of the former jazz concentration established in 1996. This major is interdisciplinary, drawing from various areas across the School of Music as well as UCLA’s Department of African American Studies. Candidates must be eligible for a split appointment in one of the School’s three cognate departments: Ethnomusicology, Music, or Musicology, with a preference for a scholarly and/or artistic area and approach that complements existing departmental strengths. The ideal candidate would have a creative practice in addition to their scholarly output.

Applicants for the position must have demonstrated a record of excellence in, or show exceptional promise for, high-quality performance, creative work or research, teaching, and professional development. In addition, applicants must have both interest and demonstrated success in the mentorship of students from historically underrepresented and underserved populations. The successful candidate will be expected to advance their active mentoring activities and participate in programs that provide creative, research, and professional development opportunities to a diverse student body.

Teaching and service expectations will not exceed those of other faculty positions. Candidates should be able to teach classes ranging from large history of jazz courses to graduate seminars on specific topics, in addition to core curriculum courses in the Global Jazz Studies major. Candidates with a doctorate or its professional equivalent in academic and creative experience are preferred. A master’s degree is required.
