Position description

The Luskin School of Public Affairs at UCLA invites applicants to serve as the Meyer and Renee Luskin Endowed Professor of Innovation and Sustainability and as the Faculty Director of the Luskin Center for Innovation (LCI). LCI is an endowed research center with a reputation for conducting rigorous, influential environmental policy and planning research. The Center’s research model brings scholars together with civic leaders to solve local, national, and global environmental challenges.

The ideal candidate will be an advanced associate or full professor who is an intellectual leader in environmental scholarship, has a track record of high-quality research and fundraising, and can engage students and stakeholders on topics that intersect environmental, social, and equity concerns. We are looking for an individual who can craft an enhanced vision for LCI and lead it into its second decade of excellence. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate interested in providing intellectual leadership and an entrepreneurial vision, while also having access to resources to conduct high-quality research and outreach.

LCI’s approach is collaborative. The Center works with dozens of scholars across an array of disciplines and engages with hundreds of civic partners that inform and utilize our research. Civic partners include government agencies, advocacy organizations, and community leaders. The LCI team includes 20 affiliated faculty and currently employs 11 full-time staff and 20+ students including two postdoctoral scholars and five doctoral students, with an annual operating budget of approximately $2 million from research grants, contracts, gifts, and endowed funds. Future budgets will include additional endowed funds from two new gifts that will be available for use by the successful candidate.

The LCI is part of the UCLA Meyer and Rene Luskin School of Public Affairs, an interdisciplinary environment that focuses on human well-being at every level of analysis and is known for cultivating leaders and change agents who advance solutions to society’s most pressing problems. The successful candidate will hold a primary appointment in the department of Public Policy, Social Welfare, or Urban Planning and join faculty from 21 disciplines, spanning social and/or environmental sciences. The Luskin School offers Masters Degrees in each of the three fields, doctoral degrees in Urban Planning and Social Welfare, and an undergraduate major in Public Affairs. LCI affiliated faculty and doctoral students come from a wide range of disciplines across campus. The school and university have several other large and thriving research institutes focused on various aspects of environment, governance, and social well-being, including the Institute of Transportation Studies and the Institute of Environment and Sustainability. UCLA is the largest and most comprehensive campus in the UC system, with 45,000 students seeking degrees across the liberal arts and sciences and professional schools, located in the second largest city in the nation and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the nation. UCLA is regularly ranked as the top public university in the US and among the top 20 universities, public and private, worldwide.
