SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education Initiatives within the Division of Undergraduate Education, the Academic Coordinator responsibilities in two broad areas: (1) coordination and management of undergraduate academic programs and initiatives within the Center for Community Learning (the Center), including the 195CE internship program and the Community Engagement and Social Change minor; and (2) strategic communication and outreach for all programs across the Undergraduate Education Initiatives (UEI) unit, including the Center, Clusters, Fiat Lux, and the freestanding minors under the Dean of Undergraduate Education.

In this leadership capacity, the Academic Coordinator works with the UEI Directors, each program’s affiliated faculty, and campus partners to develop and sustain programs designed to offer the highest quality of undergraduate education at UCLA. The Academic Coordinator independently manages all aspects of assigned curricular programs through stages of planning, implementation and assessment to ensure they are accomplishing their goals and objectives. The Academic Coordinator supervises graduate student instructors and staff assigned to relevant programs.

The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree and knowledge of issues in higher education; experience working with academic policy and programs at a large public research university; broad familiarity with existing curriculum, programs and services for UCLA undergraduates; knowledge and skills with strategic marketing and communication; skills in data retrieval and information management; demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students; interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of differing social, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds; the ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission and strategic priorities of the Division and Undergraduate Education Initiatives.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM COORDINATION, MANAGEMENT AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

Under the general guidance of the Director of the Center of Community Learning, the Academic Coordinator will coordinate programmatic support for the Center. This includes providing leadership and independently managing the Center’s minor, internship program and related internship programs (e.g., Quarter in Washington) as well as other assigned programs to increase opportunities for student access and ensure programmatic growth. The incumbent builds relationships and collaborates with campus partners to develop, implement and sustain programs.

The Academic Coordinator provides support and coordination for programmatic, budgetary, personnel, space, and information technology matters relevant to assigned programs. This includes, under the oversight and guidance of the Director of Academic Initiatives, planning and overseeing the annual program budgets for assigned programs.

The incumbent will manage and organize data and information related to assigned programs and initiatives, creating systems that are current, accurate and accessible; prepare proposals, memos and reports; assist in Academic Senate review processes; compile and organize research to support the development of new initiatives; coordinate and plan events and meetings for UEI’s academic programs. The incumbent maintains updated archival information and provides periodic reports to the Dean of Undergraduate Education, UEI Directors, and other senior leaders as requested. In addition, the incumbent will represent the Center and UEI academic programs in various contexts as needed across campus and beyond.

COORDINATION OF COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH

The Academic Coordinator is responsible for strategic communication and outreach efforts for all UEI programs, including but not limited to, the Center for Community Learning, the UCLA Cluster Program, Fiat Lux Seminars, and the freestanding minors (i.e. Community Engagement and Social Change, Disability Studies, Food Studies, and Social Thought). The incumbent contributes directly to (1) expanding existing academic programs and launching new initiatives and (2) engaging multiple audiences across campus and throughout Los Angeles. This includes developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies and content for all UEI programs; working with the development team to shape academic messages for prospective donors; managing websites for complex programs; developing, designing and archiving print collateral including flyers, brochures, programs, and other publication materials; collaborating with video production teams on UEI projects; overseeing social media activity across all platforms; and serving as UEI’s communication liaison with the College, Division and the University Communication teams.
