Position description

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music’s Department of Ethnomusicology invites applications for a part-time lecturer position in Music of Java for Winter and Spring quarters of the 2021-22 academic year.

Candidates must have advanced expertise in group and solo performance of a diverse mixture of Javanese music and instruments consisting of the Central Javanese gamelan, a percussion-dominated musical ensemble featuring tuned bronze gongs, bronze metallophones, and drums, along with flutes, zither, vocals, and spiked fiddle. University teaching experience preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to direct performance ensembles. The position also requires the successful candidate to interact with the Javanese community on various cultural and educational initiatives, PhD in ethnomusicology or related field is preferred.

Candidates should submit: a cover letter stating interest in the position, a comprehensive curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a statement of contribution to diversity. Applicants may consider including online video links representing their teaching although doing so is not required.
