Position description

The School of Nursing at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks applicants for an Adjunct Faculty position. Qualified applicants will be doctorally prepared to fulfill teaching responsibilities in classroom and clinical settings, supervise undergraduate and graduate student projects, and engage in scholarship in health settings.

Applicants must meet the academic and scholarly credentials for the Adjunct faculty series. This position is open to applicants from all clinical specialties. The successful applicant will teach primarily in prelicensure programs, and may teach in graduate programs as well. Rank and salary will be commensurate with background and experience.

The School of Nursing prepares nurses and scholars to lead and transform nursing care in a rapidly changing, diverse and complex healthcare environment through academic excellence, innovative research, superior clinical practice, strong community partnerships, and global initiatives. As part of the UCLA Center for Health Sciences, the School of Nursing is affiliated with the highly acclaimed Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Hospital.

Qualifications:

  1. Doctorate (PhD or DNP) in nursing from an accredited university
  2. Demonstrate active scholarly work
  3. The ability to teach and mentor students
  4. excellent clinical skills in related specialty
  5. have/or be eligible for a license as a Registered Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist in California,
  6. meet eligibility requirements for BRN certification at the Instructor level (i.e. evidence of current clinical competency in related specialty; evidence of formal coursework in education of nurses, and at least one academic year of clinical teaching experience
  7. demonstrated commitment to diversity as a core educational value.
  8. National certification is preferred.
  9. Successful candidates should have a good understanding of the academic process and the University setting along with the ability to establish excellent working relationships with other faculty, students, and preceptors.
  10. The position may require traveling to clinical sites within the greater Southern California community.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. organize and implement approved courses in the Baccalaureate and Master’s Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN) programs;
  2. employ state-of-the-art teaching strategies to maximize student engagement and facilitate progressive attainment of nursing competencies in all areas
  3. construct and administer appropriately-leveled student competency evaluations, assess student clinical judgement, and administer student evaluations to include tests and performance exams (e.g., Objective Structured Clinical Exams [OSCEs]), and calculate/record final grades;
  4. provide supervision for clinical preceptors at clinical training sites to insure effective student learning;
  5. supervise and instruct students in fundamentals, skills labs, and physical assessment labs as assigned;
  6. participate in clinical site development and provide evaluative feedback to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Associate Dean for Student Affairs (or designee) regarding the fit of clinical sites to student learning needs;
  7. provide student advising and mentorship as assigned, and maintain communication with the Director for Student Affairs to coordinate student support initiatives;
  8. function effectively as part of teaching teams in the collaborative development of course materials, curriculum, and outcome measures;
  9. conduct scholarly and creative work relevant to clinical nursing practice, including but not limited to, evidenced-based practice, nursing leadership, health policy, ethics in nursing, and clinical or health services research, and;
  10. provide service to the School, University, and the nursing profession through active participation and leadership in taskforces, standing committees, shared governance, and professional organizations.
