Position description

The University of California, Los Angeles Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in neurodegenerative disease epidemiology, human genetics, and/or bioinformatics analyses of -omics data. The postdoctoral scholar will join an exciting, multidisciplinary research team in Neurology in the Paul and Chang labs using high-throughput, omic technologies to study neurodegenerative disease and aging.

The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to and lead projects involving high-dimensional data (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD). Using multi-omic data and a systems biology pipeline, the candidate will lead research investigating immune system decline and how it relates to PD/LBD/PDD. The candidate will also collaborate with other team members and projects who work on characterizing genetic/epigenetic contributions to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cognitive decline. The candidate will work with faculty members, led by Drs. Kimberly Paul and Timothy Chang, with a range of expertise (e.g., epidemiology, neurology, bioinformatics, human genetics, etc.).

Responsibilities
• Use bioinformatics tools to analyze high-throughput omic data (genetic and genomic data, including whole genome/exome sequencing, transcriptomic, metabolomic)
• Perform analyses to examine how multi-omic data are associated with neurodegenerative disease outcomes and medical data
• Perform statistical analysis of omic data in case-control and cohort study designs
• Prepare manuscripts, grant proposals, and scientific meetings presentations
• Work independently and collaboratively with highly interactive research groups
Requirements
• PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics/Statistics, Human Genetics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or other relevant computational disciplines
• Programming proficiency in R (preferred), or other statistical languages (Python, C, C++, etc), with experience handling large omic data files in various formats
• Experience in analysis of omics data using bioinformatics tools, experience with human sequence data is a plus
• Working knowledge of statistical genetics is a plus
• Ability to analyze data on the cloud (AWS, Google or Azure) is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication
