Position description

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites nominations and applications for Director of the Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC) at the rank of Academic Administrator.

The Director of the UWC administers all aspects of the writing center, which serves traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students. The director provides leadership in writing tutoring for undergraduates across the university’s campus and colleges; designs and coordinates structured, personalized writing instruction that reflects and integrates current writing theory and practice for a wide range of writing projects; performs outreach to faculty and courses across campus; and organizes and delivers presentations and workshops related to writing processes and skills to a range of university audiences. The UWC operates largely on the peer mentoring model and includes both face-to-face, online writing support, and workshops requested by faculty or other campus units/organizations. The Director of the UWC reports to the Director of Writing Programs. The UWC Director also teaches between one and two tutoring mentoring courses per quarter.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D., Ed.D. in a discipline relevant to the position or commensurate experience in writing center administration. Evidence of excellent administrative performance in a college or university writing center; Training in writing center theory and administration, multilingual writing theories, and demonstrated knowledge of best practices in the field. Demonstrable excellence in teaching undergraduate writing courses. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills, and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of effective management and mentoring of student employees; experience with budget management; experience teaching undergraduate composition courses; evidence of effective tutoring or teaching multi-lingual writers; experience in tutor mentoring; and evidence of innovative educational programming.

Responsibilities:

Oversee all operations of the UWC, including managing its daily operations, overseeing all budget, payroll, and purchasing activities, maintaining its technology and equipment needs, and assessing the effectiveness of its programming and operations.
Train, direct, and mentor the UWC’s staff of 35 to 50 undergraduate employees. Organize and sustain instructor development programs in collaboration with other disciplines.
Strategically direct, promote, and publicize the services of the Writing Center, including developing and managing its content marketing.
Teach tutor mentoring courses during the 3 quarters.
Engage in service at the department, college, university, and national levels.
