Summary:
Under the direction of the Summer Program Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, the Educator will create this course of study, prepare materials, and deliver an excellent summer Music Educator enrichment course for Geffen Academy’s Summer Program students. The Educator will teach three courses; one guitar lab, one piano lab, and one songwriting and music composition course, designed for students entering grades 6-12. The classes are 90 minutes long, over a three (3) week period. The course will be taught in-person on Geffen Academy’s campus.

Job Duties:
• Consistent with the department’s goals participate in the design and development of curricula that develops a creative and innovative mindset and joy in the Geffen Academy’s students.
• Create one introduction to guitar and beat-making course for students entering grades 6-12.
• Familiarity with acoustic and electric guitar playing, piano playing, song-writing, and instrument care.
• Familiarity with MIDI keyboards and pad controllers and their pairing with Ableton.
• Familiarity with music theory.
• Engage students in composing melodies and harmonies, mixing samples, manipulating sounds and effects, recording vocals, and integrating instruments.
• Create a learning environment where students feel safe, welcome, and challenged.
• Consistent with department leadership’s direction, collaborate with other educators in creation of the Geffen Academy program that meets the need and interests of the Geffen Academy’s students.
• Consistent with department leadership’s direction, collaborate with relevant UCLA faculty in devising programs that enable Geffen Academy’s students to take advantage of Geffen Academy’s relationship with a research university operating at the cutting edge of knowledge creation.
• Consistent with department leadership’s direction, assess the continued relevance and success of course offerings within the department.
• Be available to students and parents for any and all department related issues.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Must have a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in a related field and a strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy’s mission, vision and values.
• Experience with musical instruments and music composition
• Should have familiarity with educational management systems including Blackbaud, Google Classroom, and Zoom.
• Unquestionable personal integrity, excellent judgment, sound instincts, diplomacy and patience, and strong work ethic.
• Strong background in secondary education, including creating and producing high quality curriculum and educational programming, with a clear understanding and embrace of the school’s mission, vision, and values.
• The ability to think and act strategically combined with a strong commitment to providing an excellent and accessible educational experience for each student.
• Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption.
• Must be capable of developing and sustaining close, effective working relationships with other staff and educators, including on matters of interdisciplinary and institutional concern.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain complex issues to the Geffen Academy senior staff, families, and students.
• Highly perceptive and intuitive.
• Exceptional listening skills and sensitivity to the needs of others.
• Collegially inclined with peers; a willing communicator and collaborator; enthusiastic team player.
• Comfortable working within a fast-paced summer program environment.
