Position description

The Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is currently recruiting a full-time Assistant Project Scientist to jointly work with Drs. Nelson Freimer and Loes Olde Loohuis. The Assistant Project Scientist will work as a member of the labs and lead several concurrent large-scale, multi-site research studies on the genetics of severe mental illness across different countries and cultures. The Project Scientist will oversee for overall management of the research studies providing strategic guidance and technical, operational, and directive leadership for successful development and implementation of the projects activities to accomplish the goals of the research studies. The candidate will serve as an effective and diplomatic liaison with collaborating study teams to ensure that projects’ protocols are feasible in varied cultural and clinical settings and facilitate studies protocols and participants recruitment for the collaborating teams. The Project Scientist will be responsible for the planning and development, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation of the research studies, will teach and supervise staff of the project team to assure the appropriate day-to-day operations; and will communicate frequently with team members of the studies sites to facilitate participants’ recruitment. The project scientist will be expected to work independently and meet with Principal Investigators regularly to discuss the progress and project direction.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D in neuroscience, psychology or other relevant fields. Evidence of leadership ability, experience of working with researchers from different academic, cultural backgrounds and experience levels will be considered as added qualifications. Preferred candidates will have postdoctoral training and experience with writing scientific manuscripts and grants. The candidate should be highly motivated, independent, organized and detail-oriented, have good verbal and written communication skills in English, and work well in a highly collaborative environment/project. Proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese is strongly preferred.

Salary will be consistent with the UCLA Project Scientist Series. The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html) set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 37-B. The salary range for this position is $68,400 - $79,300.
