Position description

The Faculty of UCLA’s Department of Education, located within the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) is pleased to announce the search for an energetic, creative faculty member, who conducts cutting-edge research relevant to the methodology and practice of educational assessment at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), to teach in the school’s graduate and professional degree programs, and to maintain an active affiliation with the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST).

The ideal candidate is someone principally engaged in quantitatively-oriented methodological work relevant to educational assessment. Applicants should also have a strong interest in the applications of advanced measurement models and methods to substantive questions in education research, in helping improve the practice of educational assessment in support of student learning, and in contributing to policy relevant discussions about educational assessment. Experience working with large-scale K-12 assessment programs, experience or interest in the interaction of assessment, student learning, schooling practices, and educational technology, as well as interest in the development of educational assessment systems in international contexts is desirable. Candidates should also have demonstrated teaching skills at both introductory and advanced graduate levels. Candidates that have demonstrated commitment to or those who are likely to contribute to diversity-related teaching/research/service are encouraged to apply. The Department is particularly interested in and values candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving access and conditions in higher education for underrepresented students.

The Social Research Methods faculty at UCLA represents a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and interests, and strives to incorporate multiple methodological perspectives into research and teaching. CRESST in an interdisciplinary center, connected to GSEIS. (www.cse.ucla.edu), which enjoys strong partnerships with leading institutions and scholars The Center is internationally recognized for its research and development in the areas of assessment, evaluation, quantitative methodology, and educational reform, as well as the development of models, tools and other technological products, such as games and simulations (e.g., most recently the IES-funded Center for Advanced Technology in Schools). CRESST funders include federal agencies such as IES, ONR, DARPA, and NIH, State and Local Educational Agencies, foundations, and the private sector, with significant R&D funding in support of innovative assessment design, methods and products. The spectrum of effort addressed by CRESST researchers spans the education sphere including grade levels kindergarten through high school, teacher professional development and education outside of traditional schooling, in the military and in medical training. In addition, CRESST has a strong record of R & D efforts in the achievement and affective development of English language learners, and in cognition, self-management and social-emotional learning of underperforming students.

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral degree in education or related field with specialization in educational measurement, psychometrics, learning analytics, and statistical science; record of research and scholarly publications consonant with the appointment level; promise of a strong research record beyond that achieved to date; willingness to generate extramural funding for research; and interest in teaching and mentoring students at the graduate level.
