Position description

The UCLA Extension American Language Center (ALC) seeks a full-time English as second language (ESL) instructor for our intensive English programs:

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teach up to 20 hours/week, 4 quarters (42 weeks/year), as scheduled
• Participate in 3 curriculum development (student-free) weeks per year, as well as in ongoing curriculum and methodology development projects
• Assume responsibility for program support tasks as assigned
• Coordinate instruction and materials with other instructors
• Mentor part-time instructors
• Develop and coordinate curriculum and course materials, as needed
• Chair curriculum committees
• Evaluate textbooks
• Participate in quarterly student placement testing, orientation, graduation
• Participate in instructor meetings, in-services, and trainings
• Keep up-to-date on developments in TESOL

REQUIRED GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
• M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field
• 3 years teaching experience in intensive English programs including college-based IEPs.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide range of ESL (IEP) levels and skills
• Curriculum and materials development
• Teaching writing and critical thinking for academic purposes
• Current active involvement in the field (TESOL, CATESOL)
• Proficiency in the use of instructional technology
• Proven record of contributing to a supportive team environment

In addition to the above qualifications, the preferred candidate also has knowledge of or previous formal study of a second language and experience living or studying overseas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• University preparation Courses
• Preparing students for TOEFL or IELTS; SAT, GRE, and/or GMAT
• Experience in program coordination/administration
• Language proficiency assessment, testing and test development
• Teacher training
• Experience with web enhanced courses and Learning Management Systems
• International student advising

Salary range: $54,000- 57,000 year, commensurate with qualifications

This position is a non-tenured academic appointment hired on an annual renewable contract, and carries a full “career employee” benefits package.
