Position description

UCLA Extension, a global leader in professional and continuing higher education, seeks a creative and innovative individual to serve as Program Director for its world renowned Writers’ Program (Job Code: JPF02337).

Leading the world’s largest self-supporting continuing education creative writing and screenwriting program, the Program Director is responsible for operational and administrative oversight of hundreds of courses annually which entail fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, writing for the youth market, publishing, feature film writing, and television writing. The Writers’ Program’s complex portfolio contains multiple certificate programs, offered onsite and online; an annual four-day Writers Studio; nine-month Master Classes; numerous scholarships, literary prizes, and competitions; public events; consultation and manuscript services; and a robust website managed by the Program’s staff.

Program Director will work collaboratively with several hundred writers and allied professionals who teach and has general oversight of administrative staff who implement various dimensions of the Writers’ Program. Additionally, this position will be instrumental in fostering effective relationships with UCLA faculty, leading practitioners, as well as other UCLA Extension academic and administrative staff in the design of innovative programs.

Candidate must have experience either within higher education or a public service not-for-profit organization. Teaching experience in a higher education environment strongly preferred. Change management and the ability to influence, lead and direct a diverse group of staff, instructors and other internal and external stakeholders is highly essential for success in this position. Candidate must be committed to the highest level of academic standards and integrity and be familiar with educational methods and the latest technologies in traditional, hybrid and online classroom settings. This position requires excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and a highly collaborative working style. An advanced degree in literature or writing is required; PhD is preferred.

Serving a vital community outreach and engagement role for the UCLA campus, UCLA Extension is the largest organization of its type in California and is considered to be one of the top 10 programs in the United States. UCLA Extension serves 50,000 students per year with over 5000 classes and over 2500 instructors. UCLA Extension is entirely self-supporting, receiving no state or campus funding for its operations. Thus, the incoming Program Director must have demonstrated success in budget management and fiscal responsibility.

The salary range for the Program Director is $80,000 -$95,000 annually which is commensurate with previous work experience and salary history. This position is a renewable two year academic appointment. The University offers competitive benefits including full health, dental, vision, and retirement plan. Qualified applicants for this position may be considered for the department Director of the Arts which is currently vacant. The maximum salary for the Director of Arts is $125,000 annually.
