The Padua lab has a keen interest in understanding gene regulation and signaling pathways in the context of complex biological phenomena. Our clinical interests are in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colon cancer diagnosis. One focus of the lab will be to study the role of novel RNA molecules called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in IBD as novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers. These molecules have recently been implicated in cellular processes such as cancer biology and immunology. However, a detailed of analysis of the function of these lncRNAs has not been performed in the context of IBD. Our previous work set out to profile the expression of lncRNAs in IBD samples and develop lncRNA signatures. The resulting studies are one of the first to show multiple differentially expressed lncRNAs that associate with the IBD phenotype and to evaluate their function. In addition, the lab will also focus on the TGF-beta signaling pathway and its role in fibrosis, an important phenomenon in IBD pathophysiology. By targeting these aspects of gene regulation and cell signaling, we hope to better understand the IBD disease process and improve on the therapies available to our patients.
We are seeking a postdoctoral scholar to assist on the lncRNA project and to ultimately develop independent research projects. This project will require extensive use of molecular biology techniques, cell culture work, histology evaluation, and mouse work. The candidate will be expected to independently plan experiments, coordinate with collaborators, troubleshoot technical issues that arise during the course of the project, and analyze data.
