Geffen Academy Middle School Division Director

The position of Middle School Director for grades 6-8 will work under the direction of the Head of School to lead the design and implementation all of the instructional operations of the Academy, consistent with the Academy’s educational mission, vision, and values. In 2018-2019, the Middle School Division Director will be responsible for grades 6, 7, and 8. This positions will work with the Department Heads, faculty, and student services staff to develop and implement a successful educational program. This includes building and maintaining strong faculty relationships, including readers/graders and teaching assistants, as well as a comprehensive approach to management of the Academy’s student support, student activities, and athletics programs. Establishing and nurturing a symbiotic relationship with UCLA is an essential element of the Division Directors’ work.

Core Functions & Duties Relationships:

● Under the direction of the Head of School, develop strategies and practices to fulfill Geffen Academy’s mission, vision, and values.
● Facilitate and provide leadership to each academic department in fulfilling their respective responsibilities
● Facilitate and provide leadership to faculty and academic departments engaged in instructional programs that transcend boundaries between disciplines
● Provide leadership that promotes high quality instruction to the Academy’s students
● Assist each academic department in ensuring the best utilization of Academy resources, including personnel
● Partner with academic department leaders in evaluating, modifying and implementing current and future programs, both within and between academic disciplines
● Establish and nurture symbiotic relationships with UCLA academic departments relevant to the school’s programs

Academic Management and Reporting
● Implement and operate an Academy-wide system to ensure efficient, timely and accurate teacher evaluation and mentoring
● Implement and operate a system that ensures the Academy meets its reporting responsibilities to parents, both individually and collectively
● Coordinate requests for field trips beyond Westwood, off-campus activities at UCLA, and modifications of individual faculty or student programs necessary for the successful completion of student independent projects
● Implement and operate systems for resolving conflicts involving students, students and faculty, and faculty.
● Guide the creation and management of new and existing co-curricular and extra-curricular programs so that those programs support the Academy’s instructional program
● Prepare and update the portions of the Parent/Student Handbook regarding academic programs
● In conjunction with the Chief Information Officer, implement and operate automated systems for tracking student attendance; use the data from these systems to create an attendance culture supporting the Academy’s mission, vision, and values
● In conjunction with the Admissions staff, create and manage systems for the assessment and placement of new students in appropriate instructional programs
● In conjunction with the Registrar/Scheduler, create the school’s master schedule and assure that each student programs are appropriate to each student’s requirements.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

● Strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Academy’s mission, vision, and values
● A record of outstanding success as a secondary educator
● A joyful embrace of teaching, which will be a portion of the Division Directors’ work
● Experience in assessment and mentoring of faculty, whether as peer or manager
● The ability to think and act strategically combined with a strong commitment to providing an excellent educational experience for each student
● Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain complex issues to faculty, students, and families
● A career history that includes experience with issues relevant to the disparate functions over which position has supervisory responsibility
● Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption
● Must be capable of developing and sustaining close, effective working relationships with other staff on matters of interdisciplinary and institutional concern
● Familiarity with academic management software systems would be a plus
