The Life Sciences Core Curriculum seeks an Academic Administrator V. The position is full-time and the salary range is between $83,496-$113,304. The position will serve as the Senior Associate Director for the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS).

Overview of the Position: The Senior Associate Director for CEILS will be an expert in innovative and inclusive pedagogy, designing and supporting teaching development programs and resources for departments, faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) in the Life and Physical Sciences. Duties also include independent management of UCLA’s undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) Program for the Sciences.


● Report directly to the Director of CEILS.

● Independently serve as director of UCLA’s undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) Program for the Sciences.
o Evaluate and sustain the courses currently served by the LA Program.
o Expand the number of LA-supported courses in science and math departments by recruiting faculty to implement the LA program.
o Teach the LA pedagogy seminar (cross-listed course 192A).
o Create and maintain a faculty learning community, which includes instructors who integrate LAs into their own courses and collaborate with the LA Program director to plan and co-teach the 1-unit LA pedagogy seminar (course LS 192A).
o Review undergraduate student applications for selection to participate in the LA program.
o Assess and iteratively improve the LA program, reporting/disseminating results and publishing education research findings in relevant peer-reviewed journals.
o Project and manage budget allocations required to run the LA program.

● Work with CEILS team to design, implement, and facilitate teaching development programs and workshops for faculty and graduate students (primarily TAs) in the Physical and Life Sciences; lead the assessment of these programs and workshops, reporting outcomes and making recommendations for improvement based on feedback to CEILS Director.

● Independently provide instructional support to faculty, graduate students (primarily TAs), and teaching postdocs.
o Use education research and data analytics to inform departments and motivate faculty to transform and make more inclusive and equitable their instructional practices, particularly in gateway courses.
o Consult with individual faculty, offering feedback on teaching and pedagogical expertise and guidance in support of evidence-based course reform.
o Coordinate with CEILS Director to utilize the collective expertise of all members of the CEILS team, including Instructional Consultants, when engaging departments, faculty, and TAs in teaching development activities or course/curriculum reform efforts.
o Work directly with institutional leaders such as the Deans and department Chairs to support the academic success of all majors in the Life and Physical Sciences.

● Collaborate and communicate within and outside the institution.
o Assist CEILS Director in communication of strategic plans with a Faculty Advisory Committee representing all departments in two science Divisions to ensure CEILS activities align with College priorities and University mission.
o Coordinate with CEILS Director to diversify collaborations with campus leadership, faculty, and administrators outside math and sciences to expand education innovation efforts campus wide.
o Engage in community outreach to build relationships with partners outside UCLA, creating new opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

● Co-lead the development of grant proposals for extramural funding; efforts will include project conceptualization, connecting relevant campus partners, grant proposal writing, and budget development.

● Implement and administer grant-funded projects, including coordinating and executing the assessment and reporting activities, reviewing applications for selection of project-specific personnel, and managing project budgets.

● Represent UCLA and CEILS by attending and presenting outcomes of instructional initiatives at regional and national scientific and educational conferences.

● Publish scholarly work related to education research and teaching.

● Act as a liaison for CEILS by attending campus meetings and events and serving on campus committees.

● May engage in undergraduate teaching including not more than one disciplinary course per year and the LA pedagogy course as needed.

Qualifications and Application Instructions:

The successful candidate must have a PhD in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) discipline, demonstrated training and experience in undergraduate education, and demonstrated ability to engage university faculty in activities surrounding teaching. Experience working with undergraduate students to facilitate active and collaborative learning. Ability to work with and manage large groups of students, faculty, and TAs. Ability to develop, evaluate, and improve instructional materials and methods. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact effectively in programs and activities such as workshops involving faculty, staff, and students; ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of CEILS, the College, and the University.

The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Erin Sanders, Director of the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS).
