Position description

SUPRASTUDIO LECTURER

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design seek a Lecturer to co-teach with lead instructor Jimenez Lai for the 2018-2019 AY LAI-SUPRASTUDIO at the Culver City IDEAS campus.

SUPRASTUDIO is a research platform in architecture education that advances research, experimentation and cross-discipline collaboration among professors, students, and industry collaborators to expand the boundaries of architectural practice. The program is a one-year post-professional course of study that leads to a Masters of Architecture degree. Throughout the year, students work on a dedicated research topic to build a continuous and in-depth line of study. SUPRASTUDIO fills a current void in architecture education by providing a dedicated program and satellite campus for advanced applied research for the future of architecture and urban design.

LAI SUPRASTUDIO. Los Angeles, California
The objective of the entertainment studio is to consider the education of architecture as a multimedia project. By working with storyboards, models, and short films, the combined representational approaches can allow the studio work to reflect upon the world we already live in today. As a long lens looking back at earth, the idea is for this studio to be pedagogically well-grounded and provide a strong overview of the contemporary architects working today.

We will work with experts in the film industry to enhance our skillsets. Being in Los Angeles, we are in the de facto capital city of American cinema. Many of our allies in the film industry are within reach, and we can take this opportunity to contemplate the effects of contemporary media culture.

Architecture tells stories, and human stories are enhanced by architecture. If architecture (hardware) is a backdrop for humanity (software), there are many possibilities that the oscillation between two ends of the spectrum implies. Architecture is a cultural project that encompasses art, cinema, philosophy, entertainment – all human communication.
