In this course, we introduce the basic concepts in ecology and evolutionary biology including. Mendelian genetics, concepts related to evolutionary changes at micro and macro scales, phylogeny interpretation, ecological principles from populations to ecosystems, biodiversity. As an introductory course, LS7B places special emphasis on building the general problem solving, data interpretation, and critical thinking skills necessary for being a scientist.

Lecture, three hours; labs, 110 minutes. Introduction to basic principles of ecology and evolutionary biology. Letter grading.


Qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in a life science discipline (Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Animal Behavior, Genetics or other related field); experience in undergraduate teaching at a university level; substantial familiarity with biology concepts related to ecology and evolutionary biology; substantial knowledge of pedagogy as related to life science instruction.Additional preferred qualifications include experience teaching large-enrollment (300+) courses; substantial familiarity with active learning strategies and student-centered pedagogy; willingness to learn and use educational technology for hybrid flipped courses.
