Position description

The UCLA Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Adjunct Professor in musicianship. Full-time (100%) position plus benefits. 40 hours per week, including twelve to twenty weekly hours of student contact time plus TA supervision, course planning, and class preparation. Salary commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience. This is not a tenure-track position but may be renewed annually.
Responsibilities include directly teaching three sections, and supervising four sections, of first-year musicianship to students in the three departments within The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Supervision of two Academic Student Employees (i.e., Teaching Assistants) who will serve as primary instructors of four sections of musicianship shall consist of weekly meetings, regular attendance at TA-taught sections, and setting curriculum and grading policies.
Content for musicianship training shall be adapted to the specific needs of students in each section, who come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide variety of previous musicianship training. However, all sections should include a combination of keyboard and vocal skills, dictation, improvisation, composition exercises, use of technology as a teaching tool, and regular homework assignments.
Recommended qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in music performance, composition, theory and/or music education; significant professional experience as a composer/performer/educator; keyboard skills in a variety of musical styles; a record of experience teaching music students of different skill levels in a university context; familiarity with keyboard/ digital media/computer labs and current technologies in the field.
Finalists for the position may be invited to UCLA in May and June 2018 for a teaching demonstration with current musicianship students.
