The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCLA seeks applications for a full-time (100%) Assistant Researcher in the area of Plasma and Fusion Physics. The position will involve experimental investigation of fast-ion physics in the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak Upgrade (MAST-U) facility, located at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), based at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire, UK. The investigative effort, to be performed in collaboration with the MAST-U Research Team, will address multiple aspects of fast-ion physics, including fast-ion driven instabilities, fast-ion transport and their impacts on fast-ion current drive and heating. Tasks include (1) design and performance of experiments, (2) analysis of data from plasma fluctuation diagnostics and fast-ion population diagnostics and (3) validation of simulation with experimental results in collaboration with simulation code experts. All work will take place at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, and a demonstrated background directly applicable to the investigative effort and task. Ideally, the candidate should have several years related work experience following receipt of a Ph.D.. Familiarity with relevant transport modeling codes such as TRANSP and simulation codes for fast-ion instabilities are significant pluses. Candidates should provide a curriculum vita, a publication list and arrange for 2-3 letters of reference to be uploaded to UCLA Academic Recruit.
