Position description

SUMMARY
Duties consist of development and refinement of the laboratory activities, overseeing lab staff and teaching assistants, instruction on core concepts in molecular biology, training students in appropriate laboratory safety procedures, curriculum development, laboratory placement and monitoring student transition to independent research after completion of the CURL. Incumbent will report to the Director for the Collaborative Undergraduate Research Lab, a research course housed in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology. The CURL is offered within the Division of Life Sciences and overseen by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor.

DUTIES:
Academic Administration

  1. Overseeing lab staff and teaching assistants for MCDB 30H
  2. Identify sources of and assist in application for external funding to support new CUREs.
  3. Develop new vehicles for intramural and extramural outreach.
  4. Participate in dissemination of program activities and outcomes through the preparation of scholarly manuscripts for publication and development of online resources.
  5. Manage the placement of undergraduates in laboratories that best suit their interests.

Instruction

  1. Teaching for lower division laboratory courses as needed
  2. Participate in development of new courses that introduce students to the process of research and scientific inquiry.

QUALIFICATIONS: Qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in a life science discipline (Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Genetics or other related field); experience in undergraduate teaching at a university level; experience in yeast genetics and molecular biology; experience analyzing genomics data; demonstrated skill in teaching undergraduate research-based laboratories at a university level; ability to conduct undergraduate seminars based on current biomedical research; experience mentoring undergraduate students in issues related to biomedical research.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 50% appointment. Hiring is contingent upon approval of funding.
