Position description

Under the close supervision of the faculty principal investigator, the incumbent will conduct research on HIV immunopathogenesis using a variety of approaches that focus on in vitro and in vivo studies (animal and human studies). An important hypothesis for HIV-related accelerated aging is that mitochondrial dysfunction may drive cellular dysfunction, aging at the tissue level and overall end organ disease. Prior methodologies to study mitochondrial function (such as PCR) have several limitations and are based on peripheral blood that has heterogeneous cellular populations and does not predict cellular function at the tissue level. The gold standard method would measure the most important mitochondrial function (production of cellular energy) in homogeneous cellular population at the tissue level. This method is called cellular respirometry (cellular bioenergetics) and requires unique expertise. Using cellular respirometry to determine mitochondrial function at the tissue level would provide unique mechanistic insight into mechanisms of HIV-related aging and end organ disease.
