Position description

The UCLA Department of Music invites applications for a part-time lecturer position teaching Music 472 (Master Class in Opera) during Fall Quarter 2018. Salary commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience; percentage of appointment commensurate with course units.

Candidates should have a working knowledge of the operatic canon, as well as some experience with unusual and contemporary works. Strong preference is given to those with teaching experience, as well as to those who have significant experience directing operas and plays professionally as well as in university or conservatory settings. A post-baccalaureate degree is preferred.

Responsibilities will include working with graduate students in voice in ways that will encourage their cultural curiosity, help them create characters, make dramatic choices, and acquaint them with techniques for effective storytelling, both verbal and nonverbal. Applicants should be able to direct and coach students to deliver performance-ready interpretations of arias with an emphasis on an understanding of the complete operatic role. Additionally, applicants should have a working knowledge of dramatic monologues (e.g. Shakespeare, Greeks, other canonical works) as well as the ability to work with texts in Italian, German, French, English, and possibly Russian, Spanish and Czech. Fluency in these languages is not required – the ability to work with an English translation, and to help students arrive at that translation, is essential. Finally, candidates should be able to articulate a plan for a 10 week arc leading to a presentation of monologues and arias with ensemble components, stressing physical relationships and physicalization, before an invited audience.

The application deadline is August 30, 2018, with an anticipated appointment date of October 1, 2018. Applications should include a letter stating interest in the position and a philosophy of teaching, comprehensive resume or curriculum vitae, online audio and/or video links representing the applicant’s performances or productions (if applicable), and names and contact information for at least three professional references.
