Position description

The UCLA Disability Studies Program unit seeks a temporary lecturer for Winter 2019 to teach an upper division undergraduate course in the Disability Studies program.

The Disability Studies 145 course will ask students to examine definitions and some of the characteristics of those conditions that the legal system recognize as “mental disabilities.” This course will review the evolution of these definitions through U.S. and western histories, with focus on how the notions of mental illness has played in various racial, gendered and economic communities. Students will explore the approaches the U.S. legal system takes to addressing the needs, vulnerabilities, and rights of people with disabilities, and of people with mental disabilities.

UCLA has a diverse student population in one of the more diverse cities in the nation; we particularly seek candidates who have taught similarly diverse students in a major research university.

Required Qualifications:
• An earned doctorate from an accredited university
• College-level teaching experience
• Knowledge and training within the fields of disability studies and law
• Experience in teaching writing and composition

Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous experience with UCLA Disability Studies, particularly Disability Studies 145
• At least three years of college-level teaching experience
• Distinguished program of research
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must be capable of delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse student body
