Position description

The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) invites applications for the Jonathan and Karin Fielding Presidential Chair in Health Equity. This tenure-track appointment begins as an endowed chair to be held by a distinguished junior faculty member for the first five years of their faculty appointment after which the position transitions into the standard ladder faculty appointment. During the five year period, the endowment will provide with an annual research budget to support the Chair in launching a solutions-focused research career on the vanguard of health equity, health disparities and social justice. Candidates must have a commitment to innovative research that offers fresh perspectives for addressing health inequities and that connects to community need.

The appointment may be in any one or two of the FSPH's five departments, which are Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Policy and Management. We encourage applications from candidates in all disciplines of public health as well as a wide range of related fields including the social, behavioral and environmental sciences, statistics, public policy and psychology. Although the specific discipline and field of specialization are open, successful candidates need to have demonstrated experience conducting research into addressing disparities and improving health equity. Candidates may focus on reducing disparities/increasing equity across a wide range of dimensions including race and ethnicity; gender, gender identity and sexual orientation; immigration; religion, disability, linguistic group, and the corresponding forms of oppression (e.g., racism), stigma and discrimination.

Responsibilities include conducting innovative research; building a strong publications record; teaching courses and advising students; participating in the activities of the FSPH, the profession and the community; and, building a successful record of extramural research funding.

Faculty appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. To be eligible, candidates must have either already earned a doctorate (PhD, ScD, DrPH or equivalent) or have earned it by July 1, 2019. The successful candidate must have excellent research, teaching and service records for their career stage.
