Position description
As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, and building on a decade of hiring faculty who are committed to supporting the success of the diverse undergraduate student population at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the Division of Life Sciences, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Department, and the Life Science Education Department invites applicants for an Assistant Teaching Professor. An Assistant Teaching Professor is a full-time faculty position with potential for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor, which is equivalent to tenure, and is a full member of the Academic Senate. The Division of Life Sciences is deeply committed to building a community of scholars in education and is currently conducting three separate searches for Assistant Teaching Professors.
Teaching Professors’ expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education and scholarly analysis and improvement of teaching pedagogy. The successful candidate will employ and conduct research on inclusive, evidence-based, innovative teaching practices, and will effectively educate and support diverse student populations. The candidate should have discipline expertise in a topic related to Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or Animal Behavior. Their primary teaching responsibility will include instruction in the introductory courses for Life Sciences majors, specifically LS7B (Genetics, Evolution, & Ecology); they will also teach and develop an upper division course in Ecology, Evolution, or Behavior and engage with graduate students and faculty on pedagogical innovation.

Qualified applicants must have the following to be considered for the position; a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution or a related field of biology, experience in teaching undergraduates, foundational knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices and pedagogical innovation, and the ability to teach Genetics, Evolution and Ecology in the introductory Life Science Biology Curriculum. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html ) set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table 1. The salary range for this position is $78,200- $101,400. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. The search committee will ask all applicants to submit names and contact information for 3 reference writers. References will only be contacted and letters solicited for candidates retained after an initial screening. We will use the letters as part of the evaluation of research, teaching, and museum collections experience for developing the short list.
