Position description

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology as a Project Scientist in Archaeological Sciences. The Project Scientist is expected to actively collaborate with faculty members by contributing scientific expertise to research programs within the Institute. The successful candidate will have demonstrated technical skills in the areas of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating, archaeo-geophysical surveying and Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance to support research activities of faculty members.
  • Assist in the collection of archaeological samples for AMS radiocarbon dating (USA and abroad).
  • Perform laboratory work for treatment of archaeological samples (organic, charcoal and bone) for AMS radiocarbon dating using facilities at UCLA and UC Irvine.
  • Calibrate, model and interpret radiocarbon data.
  • Plan, organize, conduct and report on archaeo-geophysical surveys (USA and abroad).
  • Perform, evaluate and report on EPMA analysis of archaeological materials (glass, pottery and metals) using a JEOL JXA-8200 Superprobe housed at UCLA.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD in Archaeological Sciences, Geophysics, Geology, or related field.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience with laboratory work as applied to archaeological samples for AMS radiocarbon dating.
  • Experience in conducting archaeo-geophysical fieldwork using electrical, electromagnetic, ground-penetrating radar, and magnetics methods.
  • Experience in using an electron microprobe.
  • Peer-review publications in archaeological, geophysical or geological journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise extramural funding.
