Position description

Assistant Project Scientist I in Climate Moist Process Modeling and Diagnostics

The Assistant Project Scientist I will work on problems in theory, modeling and observational and climate model diagnostics of atmospheric moist processes. The researcher will be under the guidance of Prof. J. David Neelin in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and will interact with members of the research group and collaborators from other institutions. Research problems will contribute to understanding interactions of precipitation processes with large-scale dynamics and combining these with in situ and remote-sensing observations to constrain and improve climate model representations of these processes, including interactions with working groups such as the NOAA Model Diagnostics Task Force and Department of Energy precipitation process teams.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric/climate science or closely related discipline, 2 or more years of experience at the post-doctoral level in theory, modeling and diagnostics of atmospheric moist processes, a good publication record, effective oral and written communication skills, strong programming and analytical skills, interest in participating in scientific external funding applications, and the ability to synthesize climate model output and observations and to collaborate on interdisciplinary problems. Familiarity with the NOAA Model Diagnostics Task Force Process-Oriented Diagnostics Python- and GitHub-based framework, and experience in analysis of climate models such as Coupled Model Intercomparison Project models and/or process modeling of deep convection is a plus.

How to apply: Applicants should submit a CV, Cover Letter, Statement of Research and Statement of Contribution to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (1 page maximum for each item except CV). Consideration of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
