Position description
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA is seeking an Associate Director (AD) to help lead and organize innovative programs in pure and applied mathematics. The term of appointment will be two years, beginning August 1, 2025. The appointment may be extended for a third year by mutual agreement.
This temporary opportunity allows the AD to gain valuable experience in academic administration and exposure to cutting-edge research in pure and applied mathematics while on leave from their institution. IPAM may make arrangements with the candidate’s employer so the AD retains their benefits and status while on leave of absence. Alternatively, the AD may be hired as a Visiting Researcher and receive UCLA benefits.
The AD is expected to be an active research mathematician or scientist in a related field with a PhD or equivalent, with some experience in conference organization and/or research administration. We welcome candidates from industry and national labs as well as academia. An enthusiasm for mathematics and its applications (broadly construed) and strong communication skills are essential. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
The AD will manage about half of the programs in coordination with the organizing committees (representing diverse scientific fields) and IPAM staff. This includes making funding support decisions for IPAM participants The AD will also help set institute policy and direction, solicit and review proposals for future programs, help recruit industry sponsors for the undergraduate summer program, and occasionally represent IPAM at conferences and meetings. As a member of the institute’s directorate, the AD plays an integral role in advancing IPAM’s commitment to its EDI mission. The selected candidate will be encouraged to continue or grow their personal research program as well.
