Community Medicine Fellow / Clinical Instructor Job Description
The Department of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA offers a 12-month, non-accredited fellowship program in Community Medicine and Faculty Development. The program is designed to provide extensive training in leadership and advocacy to provide clinical care to underserved populations within a community, as well as engagement in outreach, health education, research, and collaboration with community organizations aimed at addressing social determinants of health and reducing healthcare disparities.
Key responsibilities include:
• Patient Care:
• Managing a clinical continuity of patients within their primary specialty.
• Performing clinical procedures and providing appropriate treatment plans.
• Managing complex chronic diseases and preventive care for underserved populations.
• Consulting with attending physicians on complex cases.
• Community Engagement
• Participating in community health fairs and outreach events to educate healthcare providers on health issues.
• Building relationships with community leaders and organizations to develop collaborative initiatives.
• Facilitating health education workshops tailored to specific community needs.
• Teaching and Education:
• Precepting and teaching medical students and resident physicians during continuity clinics and rotations at various sites.
• Leading small group discussions, lectures, and case presentations.
• Providing feedback and mentoring to learners on clinical skills and patient management.
• Research, Scholarly Activity and Advocacy:
• Participating in longitudinal clinical research projects focused on related issues within the community, including health disparities and interventions.
• Assisting with data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation. Analyzing data to identify trends and inform policy decisions.
• Presenting research findings at conferences or publishing in medical journals, including the annual UCLA Dept. of Family Medicine Research Forum.
• Engaging in legislative advocacy to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable populations.
Qualifications:
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Med-Peds, or Obstetrics and Gynecology
• ABMS Board certification in the primary specialty
• Strong clinical skills and knowledge
• Excellent communication and teaching abilities
• Experience with community-based research methods and program evaluation
• Leadership potential and ability to work independently and collaboratively
