Description

Summary
In this fitness course, which follows set guidelines per the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s stance on weightlifting for young adults, students will learn the basics behind designing their own individualized fitness program. Proper technique will be emphasized for all activities and modifications for exercises will be taught based on students’ needs. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use an Olympic barbell and the various exercises that can be utilized with it. Additionally, students will learn proper gym/weight room etiquette.

Under the direction of the Summer Program Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, the Summer PE, Fitness, Weightlifting, and Nutrition Educator will create this course of study, prepare materials, and deliver an excellent summer Athletic, Strength and Conditioning enrichment course for Geffen Academy’s Summer Program students. The Educator will teach two courses, 3 sections (total); one course designed for students entering grade 5 (45 minutes), one course for students entering grade 6 ( 50 minutes each), and one course for students entering grades 7-11 (90 minutes). All classes meet once, daily, over a three (3) week period.

Job Duties
• Consistent with the department’s goals participate in the design and development of curricula that develops a creative and innovative mindset and joy.
• Create and implement an interactive experience that fosters a student’s understanding of physical fitness and nutrition, designed for enhancement of a student’s dedicated sport(s).
• Create fun exercise and stretching workouts to engage and challenge students to reach short term goals.
• Engage students in real-world functional fitness and bodyweight exercises.
• Create a learning environment where students feel safe, welcome, and challenged.
• Consistent with department leadership’s direction, collaborate with other educators in creation of the Geffen Academy program that meets the needs and interests of the Geffen Academy’s students.
• Be available to students and parents for any and all department related issues.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

• Must have a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in a related field and a strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy’s mission, vision and values.
• Should have familiarity with educational management systems including Blackbaud, Google Classroom, and Zoom.
• Unquestionable personal integrity, excellent judgment, sound instincts, diplomacy and patience, and strong work ethic.
• Strong background in ages 10-17 education, including creating and producing high quality curriculum and educational programming, with a clear understanding and embrace of the school’s mission, vision, and values.
• The ability to think and act strategically combined with a strong commitment to providing an excellent and accessible educational experience for each student.
• Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption.
• Must be capable of developing and sustaining close, effective working relationships with other staff and educators
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain complex issues to the Geffen Academy senior staff, families, and students.
• Exceptional listening skills and sensitivity to the needs of others.
• Collegially inclined with peers; a willing communicator and collaborator; enthusiastic team player.
• Comfortable working within a fast-paced summer program environment.
