Position description
Associate Project Scientist for The Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center Department of Psychiatry.
The Project Scientist candidate will conduct independent research in collaboration with UCLA Faculty investigating the molecular biology of brain tumors in human tissues and murine models. They will participate in the scientific and research training activities at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.
Specific Responsibilities:
• In collaboration with UCLA faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosurgery, they will analyze genomic and single cell RNA seq data from human brain tumors to discover novel candidates and potential therapeutics for brain tumors.
• They will perform experiments in vitro and in vivo to test potential therapeutics as well as to study the interactions of brain tumors, vascular cells and immune cells.
• They will implement complex study protocols, coordinate research staff involvement in data gathering, and interact frequently with research staff.
• They will help to train UCLA research staff and will supervise this staff in the performance of analytical techniques as well as in vitro human cell culture and in vivo xenograft models.
In addition, will:
• Independently write draft manuscripts of research study findings for submission to peer review journals.
• Present research findings at national and international research conferences related to brain tumor biology.
• Prepare and submit grants through UCLA for research funding.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. obtained prior to 2021 in the biosciences with an emphasis on cancer biology or brain tumor biology.
• More than 5 years experience working in the fields of brain tumor biology and bioinformatics.
• At least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience in academia and/or industry.
• A publication record in the field of brain tumor biology including first or co-first authored publications in strong journals relevant to the field of brain cancer stem cells.
• Experience in the manipulation of brain tumor stem cells in vitro and in vivo.
• Experience with analysis and or development of therapeutics for brain tumors.
• Experience in highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research involving brain tumors.
Required Skills:
• More than 2 years’ experience in analyzing single cell and/or single nucleus RNA sequencing data in human brain tumors with an ability to independently analyze da
• Expertise in the culture of brain tumor stem cells.
• Expertise in xenografting human brain tumor stem cells
• Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.
• Ability to train and advise laboratory personnel.
• Ability to maintain high quality scientific records.
Salary will be consistent with the UCLA Project Scientist Series. The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html) set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 37-B. The salary range for this position is $90,100 - $111,400 annually.
