Position description
The Associate Vice Provost (AVP) for Student Diversity in the Division of Undergraduate Education is a high visible and critical position at UCLA. The AVP provides full-time executive and intellectual leadership for a collection of programs designed for over 6,000 undergraduates from diverse populations, who have been historically underserved by higher education; these include students from low-income families, first-generation college students, and students from historically-underrepresented populations. The Associate Vice Provost also serves as Director of UCLA’s Academic Advancement Program (AAP).
AAP encourages and promotes academic achievement and excellence through academic counseling, collaborative learning workshops and peer learning, graduate and professional school mentoring, summer bridge programs for entering freshmen and transfer students, and scholarships for AAP students. The Associate Vice Provost is expected to build on past initiatives and develop new ones.
In general, the incumbent is responsible for the administrative, budgetary, personnel and fundraising efforts for AAP. The Associate Vice Provost reports to the Vice Provost/Dean for Undergraduate Education and represents the Vice Provost/Dean on campus committees and workgroups devoted to advancing student diversity.
A. ADMINSTRATION
Responsible for prioritizing and monitoring Academic Advancement Program’s (AAP) annual 2 million dollar budget; for developing, planning, and implementing AAP hallmark programs in 1) academic counseling, 2) collaborative learning/peer learning programs and 3) summer bridge programs. Responsible for staff development and evaluation. Responsible for working with the AAP Faculty Advisory Committee for involving the Committee in annual implementation and assessment of AAP membership eligibility criteria and all AAP programs.
Responsible for developing and monitoring the annual one million dollar budget for the AAP’s Freshman Summer Program and Transfer Summer Program. Responsible for developing curriculum for entering freshman and transfer students; for working with individual faculty to develop course syllabi, for integrating teaching of analytical reading and composition and critical thinking skills, and, in appropriate courses, problem solving and quantitative reasoning skills into Freshman and Transfer Summer Program curriculum. Responsible for hiring instructional and tutorial staff and for pedagogical
Training of teaching assistants and tutors for both programs. Responsible for curricular adjunct meetings prior to and during Freshman and Transfer Summer Programs.
With the Academic Administrator responsible for the Vice Provost Initiative for Pre- College Scholars program (VIP Scholars), provides guidance to the Academic Administrator, who serves as the Director of pre-college scholar initiatives, to develop and strengthen partnerships between UCLA and targeted Los Angeles high schools.
Provides guidance to the Director who is responsible for working with high school teachers and guidance counselors, conducting pre-college informational workshops and summer programs, improving the academic competitiveness of targeted high school students, and diversify the UCLA and UC applicant pool. Also provide guidance to the Director to ensure that VIP Scholars admitted to UCLA and AAP continue cohort activities that foster their academic and professional development as UCLA students, and promoting research efforts to understand the role and impact of the VIP Scholars Program on students, mentors, and parents.
B. TEACHING
Some teaching is expected of the AVP. The incumbent is responsible for teaching one Fiat Lux seminar annually and for teaching a subject matter course or seminar. May elect to teach in the AAP Summer Programs, either the Freshman or Transfer program.
C. CAMPUSWIDE CONTRIBUTION TO DIVERSITY
Serving as the Divisions’ Equity Advisor /Diversity Specialist and working with the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion on issues pertaining to campus climate, fostering inclusive excellence in the classroom, promoting campus wide best practices, and serving as a resource to faculty as it relates to academic programs and student diversity.
Works with Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education on matters related to undergraduate diversity and campus climate, principal liaison on diversity issues to the division of Student Affairs and to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools and Outreach Steering Committee. Responsible for organizing College of
Letters and Science yield activities—including mailings, phone calls and AAP Transfer Scholar Days and UCLA Bruin Day.
Represent the Vice Provost on the Chancellor’s Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships Committee that is responsible to design and implement programs to increase the academic competitiveness of historically underrepresented students from community colleges and Los Angeles Unified School District.
Represent the Vice Provost at national and regional conferences concerned with increasing graduation rates and increasing the number of AAP students pursing graduate and professional school study. Also represents the College at Council for Opportunity in Education and Department of Education conferences and training seminars for federally funded TRIO programs—including Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, and McNair—serving first generation college, low-income, underrepresented, and disabled student populations.
D. EXTRAMURAL FUNDING
Responsible for working with the Vice Provost and the Director of Development for the Division of Undergraduate Education to secure extramural funding—including individual, corporate, and governmental sources—for scholarships, research stipends, support for existing programs; support for retention efforts for first generation college and low-income students, and development of new programs—to increase the number of AAP students engaged in undergraduate research, to increase graduation rates, and to increase the number of AAP students pursing graduate and professional study.
Qualifications
PhD in Education or a related field and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
