Position description
Are you passionate about using your skills in biomedical data science, statistical modeling, or human genetics to make a real-world impact on human health? The Tanigawa Lab at UCLA is looking for a highly motivated individual with exceptional research creativity to join our new lab as a Postdoctoral Scholar to address one of the most significant challenges in the field: why do diseases affect each of us so differently? The position is available immediately, and the start date is negotiable. The initial appointment is two years, with the potential for renewal subject to satisfactory progress.
The Tanigawa Lab investigates disease heterogeneity, asking why individuals differ in disease onset, progression, and treatment response. We apply computational and statistical approaches to uncover the mechanistic basis of inter-individual variation in the disease, with the long-term goal of providing more tailored prevention and treatment strategies for everyone. We are interested in the following topics:
● Computational genomics for disease heterogeneity dissection
● Statistical modeling (e.g., predictive modeling on large-scale data, causal inference)
● Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for investigating disease mechanisms from genetics, single-cell, and multi-omics
● Cross-ancestry polygenic prediction and integration of biological annotations
● Therapeutic target discovery and validation from human genomic evidence
The Postdoctoral Scholar will work closely with Prof. Yosuke Tanigawa on mutually agreed interdisciplinary projects to develop foundational methodologies for dissecting disease heterogeneity and apply them to study specific aspects of disease biology.

Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent in Biomedical Data Science or a closely related discipline at date of hire.
Highly motivated candidates with demonstrated evidence of research creativity are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates should have a substantial background and research experience in biomedical data science, statistical modeling, or human genetics. Being an expert in working with cloud computing environments, building complex statistical or deep learning models, and analyzing large-scale or heterogeneous biomedical data is a plus.
Essential qualifications for this position include:
● Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python or R);
● Strong quantitative skills with a basic familiarity with statistical inference; and
● Excellent scientific communication skills (both oral and written)
