Position description

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music’s Department of Ethnomusicology invites applications for a temporary replacement part-time lecturer position in Music of Latin America: Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean Isles for Spring quarter of the 2026-27 academic year.

Responsibilities will include assigned undergraduate Ethnomusicology course(s) and Teaching Assistant supervision. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Applicants should have an established regional, national, and/or international reputation as a music educator with expertise and experience in the survey of traditional and contemporary musical culture of Latin America (Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean Isles). A post-baccalaureate degree is required.

Applications will be reviewed by the search committee as they are submitted with a final deadline of January 31, 2027 for Spring quarter employment. The anticipated employment date is April 1, 2027, in Spring quarter with a campus wide service period start date of March 24, 2027.

Applications must include: 1) a cover letter stating interest in the position and summarizing relevant experience, 2) a comprehensive resume or curriculum vitae, 3) a statement of teaching philosophy, 4) a response to the University’s Mission Statement, 5) a reference check authorization release and 6) names and contact information for at least three professional references. This position is represented by the University Council - American Federation of Teachers: CBA UCnet. Internal applicants will be considered for reappointment prior to the consideration of external applicants.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

• Advanced expertise in basic technical terms of survey of traditional and contemporary musical culture of Latin America (Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean Isles).

• Experience interacting with the world music community on various cultural and educational initiatives.

Preferred qualifications

• PhD in Ethnomusicology or related field

• University teaching experience
